On Medium: Christianity’s Miracle: It’s the Planet’s Most Annoying Religion
Here's an article about how myth differs from history, the sordid business of Christian proselytizing, and why Christianity is the world's most annoying religion.
Most or many Western atheists are especially critical of Christianity because of their self-censorship through political correctness, particularly towards the closest monotheistic religions.
Any direct criticism of Judaism or the Jewish people and immediately someone will comment on the Holocaust and anti-Semitism.
Any direct criticism of Islam and words like Islamophobia, Xenophobia and Racism will be said.
They are forms of thought control, emotional blackmail, which prevent free thinking about any protected religion.
And, as there is a culture war against the most basic ''Western values'', Christianity is the only religion that has no legal protection due the hierarchy of current political correctness, regardless of its deplorable intellectual and moral character.
Christians are more vocal in the western world for obvious reasons, as they continue to make up an important portion of the populations in many countries in this part of the world.
Muslims are getting louder in the western world. And they must be unbearable in their majority countries.
Atheist Jews are one of the groups most critical of Christianity.
Nothing against criticizing Christianity. But I'm always suspicious when i see an overly anti-Christian Atheist and... protective of other religions. It seems clear that s/he is playing according to the system.
Any religious group constantly exposed to its own gross contradictions will tend to adopt a defensive position and even reinforce them.
But don't observant Muslims and Jews believe that their myths are actually historical/real facts too?
''Most Jews are liberal, reformed, and secular in that they regard Judaism not as a theistic religion but as a cultural tradition and a social identity. These Jews aren’t interested in theology, for the reasons implied towards the end of the Hebrew scriptures, in the books of Job and Ecclesiastes.''
Today, there is a large group of self-declared secularists who are as ideologically fanatical as religious fundamentalists.
I consider the greatest error of Christianity, the most cruel and repugnant, the idea that supposed purification is only possible through suffering and self-denial.
''Think of the slick televangelists who flourish with all manner of sophistry and excuses for how Jesus’s message has evidently been reduced to something convenient and innocuous in modern secular societies, to a money-making, feel-good fan club. In the modern developed world, Christianity’s just a business, complete with mascots, slogans, shameless salespeople, and cynical executives.''
All religions have adapted to capitalist hegemony and, before that, to any dominant system.
I can agree with you that Christianity is the most annoying religion, but not so much compared to the rest.
I think that living in a western country gives you a more personal experience of Christianity, but it is possible that I would develop the same contempt if I lived in a country with a Muslim, Hindu or Jewish majority.
In fact, Christian proselytizing is more aggressively insistent. This, perhaps, is one of the factors that makes Christianity a little more annoying than other religions.
