On Medium: Killing in the Names of Jesus and Canadian Imperialism

Read on about my diagnosis of Canada’s appalling mistreatment of Indigenous people.

  1. ''As the CBC summarizes its findings, the report “found that Indigenous women and girls are 12 times more likely to be murdered or to go missing than members of any other demographic group in Canada — and 16 times more likely to be slain or to disappear than white women.” Moreover, “According to research from Statistics Canada, Indigenous women and girls made up almost 25 percent of all female homicide victims in this country between 2001 and 2015.”''

    Which race are most perpetrators???

  2. ''Many and perhaps most of the offenders are themselves Indigenous, but the point is that these people haven’t been integrated into Canadian society; on the contrary, they’ve been so marginalized in Canada that they effectively languish in a Third World ghetto within a First World nation. Thus, the report’s summary points to “a surrounding context marked by multigenerational and intergenerational trauma and marginalization in the form of poverty, insecure housing or homelessness and barriers to education, employment, health care, and cultural support.”

haha Sorry. I saw it just now. Well, when the perpretator is not white, blame the environment...

  3. You're saying that the cause for the reprehensible behavior of many indigenous men is European colonialism, but what about the majority of these men who are ''decent''??

I'm not justifying European colonialism and all its stupidities and cruelties but I think we have to learn to separate things so we don't confuse certain causes of certain effects.

In this sense, I tend to think a little in an evolutionary sense, of what are the selective pressures that have been split on indigenous populations to result in a disproportion of problematic men.

    1. Culture would matter more here than evolution. The Indigenous cultures vs Christianity and European imperialism.

  4. ''Try sounding like a conservative apologist for the past deeds of European empires, and progressives will castigate you for sexism, racism, and a hundred other forms of baseless arrogance. You’ll be told there’s no objective truth when it comes to values and the meaning of life, so we should respect everyone’s right to express themselves, in the classic liberal fashion.''

The big problem with emphasizing the ''conquests'' of the ''white man'' is that they/conservs always forget to emphasize the destruction caused by the same, for example, this abject cruelty.

  5. Not to minimize the scale of what was done to indigenous children, but this has happened in other parts of the world. Back in 2014 a mass grave containing the remains of 796 children was discovered on the former grounds of a Catholic orphanage, the now defunct Mother and Baby Home of Tuam, in county Galway, Ireland. No doubt other mass graves on Roman Catholic church properties have been discovered & will continue to be discovered in the future.

Surely the Canadian government bears much of the blame for what happened, but ultimately it was abetting the Roman Catholic Church, which is really just the old Imperium Romanum in clerical drag; an institution that for centuries, as Mark Twain put it, conferred the blessings of civilization on the widows & orphans of those it conquered.

    1. That might be a different kind of case. It was a shelter for orphans and unmarried mothers, and according to a Guardian article, unmarked graves were "a common practice at such Catholic-run facilities amid high child mortality rates in early 20th-century Ireland."

I don't see a reason to think one party was much more to blame than the other in Canada. It was a joint venture. The Catholic Church did the dirty work, but the government set them up and consigned the Indigenous children to their clutches.

  7. The stolen lands of indigenous Canadians, and Native Americans need to be returned to them. Israel was finally returned to its rightful inhabitants, and it's time we did the same here in the west.
